Basic comments on the potential of stem cell therapy in veterinary medicine and first results of mesenchymal stem cell culture

Basic comments on the potential of stem cell therapy in veterinary medicine and first results of mesenchymal stem cell culture

The meaning of adult stem cells in human medicine.

By now, stem cells are used successfully for the treatment of autoimmune and cancer diseases. In Europe, around 25,000 stem cell transplantations have already been performed.

According to the StemCells Research Organization (USA) there are currently 56 indications for a stem cell therapy. Further possible applications exist in regenerative medicine, such as myocardial regeneration after heart attack, Morbus-Crohn therapy, reconstruction of jawbones structures, and cure of feet from diabetics.

The meaning of adult stem cells in veterinary medicine

In veterinary medicine, adult stem cells are now also increasingly used in regenerative medicine. For several years, stem cells are successfully used in the treatment of sinews and ankle diseases in horses. In the veterinarian practice, cooperating with us, sinews and ankle diseases in horses represent a high percentage of orthopedic patients. In part, these patients have already received therapy for months. In others, these diseases are fresh sports injuries. Apart from the classical sinews therapy (rest, embrocation, injection of hyaluronic acid, Mueller-Wohlfahrt cocktail) also Orthokin (IRAP)-therapy and treatment with isolated growth hormone are used.

From 2005 onwards, stem cell therapy was established as a supplementation to or in combination with the above measures. Initially, still in the experimental stage, this form of treatment has been established as a routine and is now also applied in joint diseases with cartilage degeneration. It is now possible to treat other animals, such as dogs, for the indications mentioned above.

Preparation of stem cells from bone marrow

For stem cell therapy in animals, a puncture of the sternum of the animal to be treated takes place in the practice / clinic followed by the removal of bone marrow, which contains autologous stem cells. The sample (about 30 ml) receives an anticoagulant. Predominantly, the operation is performed in general anesthesia because of other operations which must be carried out beside the puncture. In most cases, 1/3 of the removed bone marrow will be re-injected directly into the organ which needs treatment. Thereafter, the extracted bone marrow is sent directly into our laboratory.

Processing of bone marrow in our laboratory

There is only a relatively small number of stem cells in the bone marrow. Therefore, a proliferation of these cells leads to a better and faster treatment success. They must be grown in the laboratory. These specific stem cells are treated in our laboratory according to the latest state of the art. We make a special point to receive a single cell suspension for achieving optimal therapeutic success. All techniques applied are based on techniques performed with human stem cells, such as those used at university clinics or the Heart Center in Bad Oeynhausen.

Depending on the nature and extent of the injury in the animal, it is possible to split the treatment in 1 to 3 steps.
Currently, the laboratory is able to increase the number of cells by a factor of 50 in about 14 days on average. Accordingly, the first injection takes place in the practice or clinic about 14 days after the withdrawal.
Depending on the growth rate of cells and the severity of the injury, the injection can be repeated once or twice if necessary and can be combined with further treatment measures.

During the proliferation of stem cells in our laboratory, quality controls are obligatory.
